From Dubrovnik: Mljet National Park & Elaphiti Islands Trip
The best part of this trip is its mix of fast boat travel and real time on Mljet, Croatia’s most rewarding island escape from Dubrovnik. You can cycle around the national park’s saltwater lakes, swim in Odysseus Cave, snorkel in clear coves and finish with the famous Blue Cave on Koločep.
I like the small boat, usually limited to about 12 people, and the way the crew adjusts the route for wind and waves. I also like the choice at each stop: swim, snorkel, cliff jump, rent a bike, paddle a kayak, grab a coffee or simply sit by the water. The main drawback is the length and cost. It is an active day of roughly 11 to 12 hours, and the $153 price does not include the Mljet entrance fee, lunch, bike rental or kayak rental.

Key points to know before booking

- Mljet gets the longest stop: Plan on roughly two to three hours for the national park, enough for biking, swimming or a visit toward the lake island.
- Odysseus Cave is the strongest swim stop: Its bright blue water and rocky entrance are more memorable than the Blue Cave for many visitors.
- The speedboat is part of the experience: The ride is quick, open to the sun and often bumpy when the Adriatic wind rises.
- The crew changes the plan when needed: Marko, Snezana, Suzy and other Sea Breeze guides have adjusted stops for weather and crowd levels.
- Extra costs matter: Bring cash for the Mljet park ticket, food, and optional bike or kayak hire.
- This suits active visitors: You need to manage swimming, climbing in and out of a boat, walking and possibly cycling.
Why Mljet is worth the long boat ride

Dubrovnik is beautiful, but its old center can feel packed, especially in summer. Mljet offers a very different day: pine-covered shores, quiet water, simple paths and two saltwater lakes inside a national park.
The boat ride to the far end of the route takes time, but the crew puts that travel to good use. You skim past rocky coves and low islands, with music playing and the coast opening up around you. Windproof jackets and bottled water are supplied, which matters once the boat picks up speed.
You will not get a slow, shaded ferry crossing. This is a small open speedboat, and there is no fixed shade over the seating area. The breeze can make the ride feel cool, but the sun remains strong, so use sunscreen repeatedly, wear a long-sleeved shirt if you burn easily and secure your hat with a cord.
The ride can be smooth, but it can also be bumpy. That is part of the fun for some people and a genuine concern for others. If you dislike fast boats, waves or a full day outdoors, a larger, slower island cruise may suit you better.

Mljet National Park: the main event

Mljet National Park is the reason to choose this excursion over a simple Blue Cave outing. You usually reach the island early, before spending time on the closer Elaphiti stops, giving you a better chance to enjoy the park without rushing through it.
You get free time rather than a tightly managed walking tour. The crew helps you get oriented and explains the choices, then you decide how to use the next two or three hours. That freedom is valuable, but it also means you need to manage your own time carefully.
The most popular option is renting a bicycle and following the loop around the lakes. One route described by visitors covered about six miles, a comfortable outing for anyone used to casual cycling. Stop for a swim, pause at a viewpoint or simply ride beneath the trees instead of trying to cover every corner.
You may also rent a kayak and paddle across the saltwater lakes toward the small island with its monastery. Kayaking costs extra, and bike rental also costs extra, so ask about prices before setting off. If you prefer not to pay more, walking and swimming still give you a good feel for the park.
The two lakes are the park’s defining feature. Their calm saltwater, wooded edges and easy swimming places feel far removed from Dubrovnik’s stone streets. I would give priority to the lakes over trying to squeeze in every optional activity. One visitor wished for another hour or two here, which tells you something about the stop’s appeal.
The entrance fee is not included. Recent pricing reported during the tour was about €25 per person, but prices can change. Bring cash, and keep enough time for the return meeting point. Mljet rewards a relaxed pace, but missing the boat would ruin the day.
Odysseus Cave and the choice to jump

Odysseus Cave is one of the trip’s most exciting stops. The boat brings you to a rocky opening where sunlight turns the water an intense blue. You can swim or snorkel inside, and confident swimmers may jump from the rocks.
The cliff jump is not a requirement. Heights mentioned by visitors include a roughly nine-foot ledge, but the exact jump available can depend on the water and conditions. You can stay in the boat, use a life jacket, swim near the entrance or enter with help from the crew.
This stop works best for people comfortable in open water. The rocks can be uneven, and getting into the cave takes physical effort. Water shoes are a smart addition, especially if you plan to walk over rocks or climb out after swimming.
The guides take safety seriously and provide life jackets, masks, snorkels and other safety equipment. Suzy, Marko and Snezana have been singled out for helping nervous swimmers and staying close in the water. Still, you must judge your own ability honestly. A life jacket helps you float, but it does not remove the need to follow instructions.
Moon Beach and the quieter side of Mljet

Moon Beach provides a slower contrast to Odysseus Cave. The crew shares local facts about the area, then gives you time to walk along the beach, swim or return to the boat.
This is not a major cultural sight, and you should not expect a long guided visit. Its value is simple: another quiet stretch of coast, another chance to get into the water, and a break from the more demanding activities.
The day works well because the stops vary. After cycling or walking in the national park, you can swim at Moon Beach. After the open-water excitement of the caves, you can sit with a drink or enjoy the view. You are not locked into one type of activity all day.

Šipan and a taste of Dalmatia

Šipan brings in the cultural side of the trip. The island has links to the old Dubrovnik Republic, and your guide explains some of the area’s historical heritage before you have time to relax near the beach.
There is usually an opportunity to stop at a beach bar for coffee, food or a cool drink. Lunch is officially extra, although some tours have provided sandwiches, including vegetarian options. Do not count on a free meal. Bring snacks and cash, then treat any supplied sandwich as a welcome extra.
The food is part of the appeal here because it gives you a chance to try simple Dalmatian fare away from Dubrovnik’s old-town restaurant prices. One visitor found the meal on Mljet better than anything eaten in the Old Town, though food quality and availability can vary with the day and the venue.
Šipan is also a useful rest stop. You can swim, sit in the shade if available at the café, browse the small settlement or simply let your legs recover. The program aims to show you several islands rather than provide a full tour of any one village, so keep your expectations realistic.
Koločep, the Blue Cave and final swims

Koločep is generally part of the return route, with time for snorkeling and cave swimming. The Blue Cave is photogenic, but it is also the stop most likely to attract other boats.
Timing makes a big difference. Arriving late in the day can mean fewer boats inside or around the cave, and some departures have reached it when it was nearly empty. At other times, the water outside can be rough and the entrance crowded. The cave is worth seeing, but I would not choose this tour for the Blue Cave alone.
The trip may also include the Triple Caves or an additional swim stop around Koločep, depending on weather and timing. The crew has added or changed stops when conditions allowed. That flexibility is a strength, since wind can make one cove unpleasant while another remains calm.
The final ride back to Gruž can take place in the late afternoon or around sunset. It is a beautiful way to finish, but by then you will be tired, sun-exposed and possibly salt-covered. Bring a dry layer, drink water and do not plan an important evening appointment immediately afterward.
What the small group changes

A maximum of about 12 people makes this feel more personal than a large island ferry. You can ask where to swim, get help with a mask or life jacket, and hear practical advice without competing with hundreds of people.
The crew is a major part of the experience. Sea Breeze operates with guides and skippers including Marko, Snezana, Suzy, Carlo and others. Names and pairings vary, but the most praised qualities are clear communication, calm boat handling, safety awareness and a willingness to join the activities.
The guides also help you use limited time well. At Mljet, they explain whether biking, kayaking, walking or swimming will fit the schedule. At the caves, they give instructions for entering the water. When wind forecasts threaten the planned route, they may rearrange the order or replace a stop.
That adaptability does not mean every day follows the same itinerary. You should expect changes caused by wind, waves and crowding. If seeing one specific place is your only reason for booking, this uncertainty may bother you. If you want a full day of coastal exploring, it is a benefit.
Cost, inclusions and what to pack

At $153 per person, this is not the cheapest way to leave Dubrovnik. You are paying for a long speedboat day, a small group, a skipper, a host, safety equipment and several separate island stops.
The value improves if you would otherwise book several outings. In one day, you cover Mljet National Park, Šipan, Koločep and possibly Lopud or extra coves, with swimming, snorkeling, biking and cave visits built into the route. You also avoid arranging separate boat tickets and working out how to reach Mljet on your own.
Budget for these extras:
- Mljet National Park entrance, recently about €25 per person
- Lunch and drinks
- Bicycle rental
- Kayak rental
- Personal snacks and any café purchases
The tour supplies snorkeling equipment, life jackets, safety gear, bottled water, insurance, and wind and waterproof jackets. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, breathable clothing, sports shoes, snacks and cash.
I would also pack water shoes and a waterproof phone pouch. You will be moving between boat, rocks, beaches and caves, and a phone that cannot handle water is not much use for those photos. Wear clothing that dries quickly, and protect your shoulders and legs during the boat ride.
The meeting point is in front of Summer House P. Sorkočević at Lapadska obala 4 in Gruž. Arrive at 7:30 AM and look for a guide in black shorts and a white T-shirt. There is no hotel pickup or drop-off, and the activity returns to the same meeting point.
Who should book this day trip

I would recommend it to active adults, couples, families with older children and anyone who wants to see more than Dubrovnik’s walls. Children under five cannot join, and the activity is not suitable for pregnant women, wheelchair users or people over 65 according to the stated restrictions.
The age restriction may feel broad, since fitness varies widely. The practical question is whether you can handle a long day on a moving boat, climb over rocky edges, swim in open water, walk or cycle around Mljet and get in and out of the boat several times.
Teenagers often fit the trip especially well. There is enough variety to prevent the day from feeling like a museum tour: swimming, snorkeling, cliff jumping, biking, music and fast boat travel. Strong swimmers can be active, while less confident swimmers can stay with the crew and use life jackets.
It is less suitable if you want a slow beach day, a detailed village tour or guaranteed restaurant lunch. You also need to be comfortable with direct sun and limited shade.
Should you book the Mljet and Elaphiti trip?
Book it if you want the biggest possible taste of the southern Dalmatian islands in one long day. The Mljet lakes and Odysseus Cave are the real reasons to go, while Šipan, Koločep, Moon Beach and the Blue Cave add variety on the way back.
Skip it if you dislike speedboats, need shade, have limited mobility or prefer to explore one island slowly. Also compare the price with booking directly through Sea Breeze, as one fare comparison found a €30 difference.
For most active visitors with only a few days in Dubrovnik, I think the tour earns its price. Arrive ready for sun, waves, swimming and optional extra costs, and you will get a much fuller Adriatic day than a simple Blue Cave cruise.
